In the 90s …

texting involved paper and a pen …

… our selfies were Polaroids …

… our favorite music was on mix tapes.

Sex was dangerous, music was raw, and falling in love felt nostalgic.

We were friends and lovers.

We thought we knew everything.

We knew nothing.

We were here.

Set in the early 1990s, a time before the internet, social media, and smart phones, We Were Here is the prequel to Geoducks Are For Lovers. This book can be read as a standalone.

“This story has it all! Just like a mixed tape; we get a dose of steamy romance, angsty ballads and sweet love songs woven together in a compelling, heartwarming and sometimes heartwrenching journey of self-exploration.” Helena Hunting, New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author

Meet Maggie Teaser

ONE:

Maggie, Freshmen year

After being quizzed about the Dewey Decimal system, and failing, I returned to my room in shame. At this rate, if I wanted to work on campus, I’d be washing dishes in the dining hall. Nothing could be grosser than the used food and unclean dishes of thousands of college students. I gagged at the thought as I opened our door.

Inside, Jennifer—my perfectly nice and perfectly normal roommate—was straddling a guy on my desk chair, making out.

She might have been trying to eat his face. I couldn’t really tell in the two seconds I stared at them before clamping my eyes shut. I know I spied her tongue. Outside of her mouth. All I could see of him were his dark hair, long legs, and brown Wallabee boots.

Panicked about interrupting something, and simultaneously feeling like a prude, I backed my way through the open door. After it quietly clicked close, I pressed my head against the cool metal.

I could go back to the library, except I left there ten minutes ago. The dorm lounge was an option, but this time of day meant it would be filled with some random club. I couldn’t remember if Thursday’s meeting was German Lovers or Save the Geoducks—our school mascot. Neither appealed to me.

I stared harder at the painted metal, wishing the make-out session on the other side would end sooner rather than later.

“Are you locked out?” The blond guy from down the hall rested his head on the bulletin board next to my room. “Or are you praying?”

Pressing my cheek on the door, I twisted to see him more clearly.

“It’s okay if you are. Pray if you’ve got to.”

“I’m not. Just thinking.”

A loud moan sounded from inside the room. “Oh, oh, oh God.”

“Sounds like someone in there is praying.” His lips curled into a smile. “You might want to step away, lest someone think you’re a pervert for eavesdropping.”

I jumped away from the door. “I wasn’t listening!”

Chuckling, he held up his hands in defense. “Not judging you. Praying and voyeurism both have their places, usually in Madonna videos.”

Another not so soft groan carried from my room. I took a step farther away. My favorite black on black Swatch showed the time as four o’clock. Too early to go to dinner. Looks like I’ll be going to the lounge after all.

“You want to come hang out in my room until they finish whatever they’re doing in there?” His offer sounded genuine and his smile was more than friendly. He gestured over his shoulder to the open door across the hall and down a few rooms. “I can promise you my roommate isn’t in there making out with anyone. We should be safe.”

TWO:

Selah, Freshman Year

“Miss Elmore.”

Great. Despite most definitely being outside of class and off campus, he’d reverted to formal names.

“Mr. Vincent.”

“I’m surprised to see you here.” He ignored introductions to his friend.

“I could say the same. I didn’t realize you lived in Olympia.”

“I don’t.”

Geez, this conversation couldn’t be more boring. Maybe his companion was friendly. I stuck out my hand. “Hi, I’m Selah, one of Mr. Vincent’s students at Evergreen.”

“Pleased to meet you. I’m Kevin.” If someone could be described as beige, he was that person. Nothing remarkable about him except how unremarkable he looked. “Are you taking Jason’s sex class?”

Thankfully, I remained composed enough not to swallow my tongue. “Is that how he’s describing it? Professor?” I held my gaze steady on Jason’s face. I swore I saw his cheeks color with pink.

“Kevin.” His voice lowered, stern and threatening.

Kevin’s grin told me he enjoyed teasing Jason. They must have been old friends. “Fine, are you in Professor Vincent’s biology class?”

“I am. I’m hoping for an A.”

Kevin’s clever eyes swept over me. “What year are you?”

“First.”

Jason groaned while Kevin nodded and asked, “Tell me, Selah, has anyone ever called you Lolita before?”

Now my own cheeks heated. My skirt suddenly felt too short—the gap between it and my boots exposing a lot of fishnet covered skin. Or it could have been my short pigtails. I realized all I needed was a lollipop.

“Can’t say it’s happened before, Kevin.”

Clearly, Kevin knew my game. Or maybe Jason’s. I’d never thought he could be the type to seduce his students. As far as I knew, this class was his first teaching job.

“How did you get in here?” Jason changed the subject. “Fake ID?”

Busted. “No one carded us.”

“Doesn’t make you legal.”

“Are you going to call the police? Have us arrested and handcuffed?” It might have been the vodka, but I decided to be bold and push him. “Are you into handcuffs, Professor?”

Jason choked on his beer, coughing to clear his throat.

After making sure his friend wasn’t dying, Kevin laughed. “This is more entertaining than I imagined a college dive bar could be.”

I focused my attention on the non-choking friend. “What brings you to Olympia, Kevin?”

“I’m in politics.”

Jason found his voice again. “He’s an assistant to an assistant to a state senator.”

“Then you know all about impropriety.” I gave him a sweet smile.

“It’s been a political tradition since the Founding Fathers.” Kevin raised his glass. “I like you. Care to join us?”

Jason set his beer on the table. “I can’t be seen drinking with students. Kevin, shut up.” He pointed at me. “You return to your booth and your friends, and we’ll pretend we never ran into each other.”

“Yes, sir.” I saluted him. “Can I ask one question first?”

“If he doesn’t answer, I will.” Kevin gave me a wicked grin like a wolf in beige clothing.

rating_4_80

Reading Give and Take is like coming home from a long day to put on your comfiest jammies and curl up in front of the fireplace with a mug of your favorite hot cocoa!  Give and Take finds us back on Whidbey Island for the holidays and many many of our cast favorites from the Modern Love Stories series make appearances. And, there are so many changes. One couple is having a baby and one couple is getting a puppy. There’s an engagement and visits from old friends.

There is no shortage of feel-good-moments in this short story! It is packed with sweet scenes and warm fuzzies. It’s great to see so many of our favorite characters back in action, and there are a few new ones stirred into the mix. <<Attention Daisy Prescott – Please let one of the Kelso Brothers get a full-length story soon!>>

The book is told from multiple POV’s so it flows quite quickly. The only problem I have with Give and Take is that there isn’t sooo much more!

Bewitched by Daisy Prescott

Madison Bradbury isn’t interested in spells or magic, or anything hocus-pocus related despite descending from the original Salem witches. Her life as a Hawthorne College junior is boring. Perfectly so. That is until Andrew Wildes appears in her class–like a quiet, brooding hero straight from one of her favorite romances.

When a local witch convinces Madison to use a love spell on her crush, what happens next is more than magical.

A crush. A love spell. What could go wrong?

***Bewitched is a standalone, New Adult Romantic Comedy with a paranormal twist. This is a 15,000 word short story/novella.***

Need a quick little shot of Halloween feels? I am loving the little world created by Daisy Prescott. She creates wonderful, quirky, engaging characters in all of her books and this sweet treat is no different! I loved Madison and Andrew and I see such great potential with the gang from Hawthorne College.

Bewitched was a quick read with a complete story, but I’m hoping for more from Salem in the future!

Review – Confessions of a Reformed Tom Cat by Daisy Prescott

COARTC FB RD banner

CoaTTC Amazon (1)

I, Thomas Clifford Donnely, am a manwhore.

I’ve been told I’m irresistible to women. Like catnip for a different type of pussy-cat. I guess you could call me a Tom Cat.

This is the story about how I lost my wingman, broke all my own rules, and found myself falling in love.

Tom Donnelly isn’t the marrying kind, or the dating kind. Even after losing his #1 wingman to love, he doesn’t see the point in relationships. When his sister’s best friend returns to Whidbey Island and propositions Donnelly for a one-night stand, he breaks one of his biggest rules—no fooling around with his sisters’ friends. It’s just sex, nothing more. That’s what Tom does and does well.

What happens when “just sex” isn’t enough?

Hailey King is more than a match for Tom’s flirtations. She’s known him most of her life and has heard the rumors about his “skills” for years. When her perfectly planned future falls apart, will the last man she should ever fall for turn out to be more than a one-night stand?

BFF K’s Review

rating_4.5

Confession: I have a book crush on Tom Donnely! MEOW!  The Tom Cat has always been one of my favorite side characters in the Modern Love Stories series, but until this book he sort of just stalked around the edges pouncing on his prey. This story brought him front and center and then turned his world upside down. Getting a glimpse of Tom (and the whole Donnely family) was a fun ride.

As a reader, you get the chance to see a different side of Tom – he’s unassuming, loyal, humble, creative, caring and generous. Though he hides many of those qualities behind his playboy image, Hailey seems to bring those best qualities to the forefront. It is fun to watch the carefully constructed walls and persona that Tom has crafted begin to crumble before he even realizes it.

This book is FUNNY, I cracked up when I went back and read quote after highlighted quote.

“Guys move shit that needs moving. I think it’s in the sacred book of being friends, especially in the men being friends with women chapter. On page forty-two: Have a penis? Thou shall move shit.”

Tom is clever and funny and his confessions are a riot. I enjoyed the banter Tom has with his friends and Hailey and I really enjoyed his internal monologue. The sex scenes are steamy, but still painted with the “book-sex-meets-reality” humor that Daisy Prescott is so skilled at capturing! All in all Confessions of a Reformed Tom Cat is a wonderful little feel good romance that adds even more characters to the beloved world of the Modern Love Stories series. The characters and stories make this series one of my all time Besties AND most recommended. It’s my kind of catnip!

Mini-Review – Take the Cake (and Run) by Daisy Prescott

Take the Cake (and Run) is a short story in the LOL #2 Anthology. All of the stories have something to do with cake and they’re LOL funny!

BFF K’s Mini-Review

(For A Short Story)

rating_4_80

I received a copy of of Take the Cake (and Run) from the FABULOUS Daisy Prescott. And it is everything I hoped for! If you’ve read any of Daisy’s Modern Love Stories series, you’ll know that her writing is sharp, engaging and super funny! This story is no exception, it’s terrific. The only thing wrong with it – it’s too short!

John and Diane are newly engaged. Diane takes John into a delicate, girly, bakery to taste wedding cakes.

“If you’re going to continue to act like a giant bearded toddler about being here…”

So, you can guess how well this starts out…the ending is super cute and a little steamy!

I don’t want to give any more away, but I want you to know that John says a prayer in his head while he’s sitting at the table during the tasting that had me literally LOL!

steamy_3

In the interest of full disclosure, So far I’ve only read a couple of the stories in this anthology. I definitely want to read more soon, there are some great authors here. But, Take the Cake (and Run) is worth the $0.99 by itself!

Review – Wanderlust by Daisy Prescott

Selah Elmore is a confident, curvy woman who knows exactly who she is and what she wants. She loves her life being a professor and popular pirate erotica author. However, when she leaves the Pacific Northwest to spend six months studying sculpture in West Africa, she learns she doesn’t know a thing about love.

Cocky, suit-wearing Gerhard charms her during a stopover in Amsterdam, but dashing, adventurous Kai sweeps her off her feet in Ghana.

Sparks fly on three continents when perpetually single Selah discovers there’s more to love and life than she ever imagined.

Sex? Absolutely.
Love? Not my thing.
I didn’t do love or butterflies, but I loved him.
I was screwed, and not in a good way.

Wanderlust is the third novel in the Modern Love Stories series. It’s a spin-off/standalone from Geoducks Are for Lovers. It isn’t necessary to read that novel or Ready to Fall prior to reading this.

BFF K’s Review

rating_4_80

I have read all of the books in the Modern Love Stories series and I adore them all! This is a particularly good story. Selah is a strong, confident heroine who must determine if the love that has caught her by surprise, is worth changes to her life that she never imagined. One of the things that I LOVE about this series is the age and maturity of the characters. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good YA novel. But, it’s also nice to read about characters who are having thoughts and experiences that are more closely related to those that my BFF’s and I might encounter in our real lives!

Kai is a terrific character! He’s charming, smart, successful, kind and caring. His sweetness and outlook on life is a balance to Selah and will have you rooting for what might seem at first to be an unlikely couple. Selah is independent, smart and sassy. I loved getting a glimpse inside her thoughts. And, if you’ve read the other books in this series, you’ll enjoy a couple of cameos from your favorite characters!

I recommend this book, the whole series really, to anyone looking for a genuinely good love story! The book has an adventurous spirit, a good sense of humor, a case of mistaken identity, a little steam and characters you will route for!
