Review – Spring Break by Andrea Johnston

Spring Break (Phoebe & Madsen Part 1)
Author: Andrea Johnston
Release Date: March 30, 2017

“Go on Spring Break!” they said
“It’ll be fun!” they said
What they failed to say was Madsen Secksin – who, like his name is pure sex and sin – would be laying in the bed next to me.
I’m determined to have fun.
I will not get my groove on with Madsen even if there are four years of pent up sexual tension between us.
I will not allow myself to fall for his charming ways.
Oh, who am I kidding?
Spring Break is meant for bad decisions.
How bad could it really be?

BFF K’s Review of Spring Break

rating_4.5

I only have one problem with Spring Break by Andrea Johnston…..I want MORE, now! Spring Break is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud, sweet and steamy read. It’s quick and fun and the perfect pick-me-up for your winter blahs. In other words, it’s everything a Spring Break should be.

Madsen and Phoebe are smart and sassy. They’ve perfected the art of enemies. But, during this trip they discover their vicious banter and sparring has really just been several years of intense foreplay! And, once the the wick is lit, this keg is going to blow!

I highlighted more in this novella than I do in most full-length books. The characters and story are so well developed, you’ll be shocked it’s a short story. And the Chapter Headings are my most favorite. Here are a couple of examples:

Warning: Sometimes Your Best Friend Really Knows What’s Best

Warning: Never Declare You Aren’t “That Kind of Girl” – It’s the First Step to Being That Girl

Warning: When the Name of the Cocktail is “Mystery Punch,” Just Say No

If you’re looking for a charming, quick read, you don’t want to miss Spring Break. I can’t wait for Johnston’s continuation of this sweet series!

BLUSH FOR ME - Cover

New York Times bestselling author Kristen Proby continues to delight the senses with the latest novel in her delectable Fusion series.

As the take-charge wine bar manager of Seduction, Portland’s hottest new restaurant, Katrina Meyers is the definition of no-nonsense, and she isn’t afraid of anything. Well, almost anything: she hates to fly. When she’s forced to travel on a death trap with wings, the turbulence from hell has her reaching for any safe haven—including the incredibly handsome guy sitting next to her.

Ryan “Mac” MacKenzie hasn’t been able to get his sexy seatmate out of his head. The way she clung to him stirred something inside him he didn’t think existed: tenderness. As the owner of a successful wine touring company, Mac thinks he’s got a handle on what life can throw at him and he’s not prepared for any surprises, especially in the feelings department. And when he brings a tour into Seduction, he sees the petite spitfire he just can’t forget.

Mac is determined to discover what else they have in common besides fine wine and the inability to keep their hands off each other. BFF K’s Review of Blush for Me

rating_4.5

I anxiously await each new release in the Fusion Series. I am confident that Kristen Proby will deliver a solid romance with a self-assured, capable, female heroine and a swoony, thoughtful alpha-hero. Blush for Me is a terrific continuation to this excellent series.

Kat is my favorite kind of heroine. She’s smart, confident and a little quirky. She’s not on-the-hunt for a man but can’t resist when Mac whooshes into her world. Mac is my favorite type of hero. He is strong, capable, gallant and not intimidated by a woman who possesses similar qualities. He is also an absolute ALPHA in the steamy scenes. And, those steamy scenes are fantastic!
Blush for Me is a quick and fulfilling, character-driven story with excellent supporting characters that surround the hero and heroine. The story has a suspenseful element that spices things up toward the end and brings the book to a very fulfilling conclusion. I definitely recommend all of the books in the Fusion Series. AND to top it off, the audio version features Abby Craden and SEBASTIAN YORK. It’s a GREAT listen; and you should definitely add Blush for Me to your TBR/TBL list!

Excerpt

“You’re going to have a great time.” She hugs me close. “There are lots of signs and people to ask if you get lost in there, but it’s not a big airport, so you should be fine. Call me when you get there.”

“If I get there,” I say and sigh deeply. “Why do I feel like I’m never going to see you again?”

“Because you’re being dramatic,” she replies and smiles brightly. “Have fun!”

And with that, she waves and drives away and I’m left alone to figure out this airport hell.

But Riley was right. Checking in and dropping my bag off is easy. Finding security is easy.

Getting frisked by the TSA guy would have been more fun if he’d looked like Charlie Hunnam, but then again, everything would be more fun with Charlie.

I follow the signs, find my gate, and am pleasantly surprised to find a bar directly across from it.

                  There is a god.

But once at the bar, I’m just too nervous to drink.

                  That’s a first.

Who in the hell gets too nervous to drink? This girl, apparently.

So I wander back to the gate and pace, dragging my small black hard-sided suitcase with red cherries on it behind me. People glance my way, but I ignore them. I’m used to it. You don’t dress the way I do, covered in sleeve tattoos, and not get looks.

Finally, my flight is called and they begin boarding. Before I know it, I’m sitting on the plane, three rows from the front—if I’m going to die, it’s going to be in first class—in the aisle seat.

“Hello,” the man next to me says. I glance his way, taking in his light brown hair and green eyes, and if we were anywhere but here, I would totally flirt with him.

But we’re on a motherfucking airplane.

“Hi,” I reply and swallow hard. The flight attendant asks us if we’d like anything to drink before we take off, but I shake my head no and stare at the pilot sitting in the cock pit. “Don’t they close that door?”

“Right before we take off,” my travel companion says. I’m surprised that I spoke aloud. “Hey, are you okay?”

                  “Fine.”

He’s silent for a moment and I keep staring at the pilot. I want to march up there and tell him to make sure that we get there in one piece. What are his credentials, anyway? I want to see his license, and a few letters of recommendation wouldn’t hurt either.

“I’m Mac.” I slide my eyes to him and nod, then whip my gaze back to the front.

                  “Kat.”

Review – Love Story by Lauren Layne

Over the course of one wild road trip,
feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love.

LOVE STORY
a Love Unexpectedly novel
Lauren Layne
Released February 14th, 2017
Loveswept

Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

Although listed as a title in the Love Unexpectedly Series, all books in the series stand alone.

BFF K’s Review of Love Story

rating_4_80

Love Story is a road trip, second chance, romance told with bits of flashback tucked into current scenes. It’s full of tension and lust and frustrating bits. In the end, it is the story of two people who are destined to be together.

Lucy fell in love with Reece at a very young age. One day, she learned the love and affection wasn’t one-sided, but mutual. She and Reece began a brief but consuming love affair that ended badly. They went their separate ways but fate and family meddling have brought them together again for a cross country road trip to start the next chapter of their lives.

There is so much tension involved in this story. I wouldn’t say it rises to the level of angst but there are some heartbreaking bits where the characters go back and forth about their feelings for one another. In the end, their desire for one another and wish to be together is stronger than the personal issues that have kept them apart.

Love Story is the tale of two people searching for their place in the world and with one another. It is full of both tension and light-hearted-moments in equal measure and it’s an enjoyable read. I am a big fan of Lauren Layne’s writing and this is another solid story added to her catalog of great romances.

Review – Royally Matched by Emma Chase

RM-FB-on-sale-5

Royally-Matched-3D-bookSome men are born responsible, some men have responsibility thrust upon them. Henry Charles Albert Edgar Pembrook, Prince of Wessco, just got the motherlode of all responsibility dumped in his regal lap.

He’s not handling it well.

Hoping to force her grandson to rise to the occasion, Queen Lenora goes on a much-needed safari holiday—and when the Queen’s away, the Prince will play. After a chance meeting with an American television producer, Henry finally makes a decision all on his own:

Welcome to Matched: Royal Edition.

A reality TV dating game show featuring twenty of the world’s most beautiful blue bloods gathered in the same castle. Only one will win the diamond tiara, only one will capture the handsome prince’s heart.

While Henry revels in the sexy, raunchy antics of the contestants as they fight, literally, for his affection, it’s the quiet, bespectacled girl in the corner—with the voice of an angel and a body that would tempt a saint—who catches his eye.

The more Henry gets to know Sarah Mirabelle Zinnia Von Titebottum, the more enamored he becomes of her simple beauty, her strength, her kind spirit…and her naughty sense of humor.

But Rome wasn’t built in a day—and irresponsible royals aren’t reformed overnight.

As he endeavors to right his wrongs, old words take on whole new meanings for the dashing Prince. Words like, Duty, Honor and most of all—Love.

BFF K’s Review of Royally Matched

rating_6_70

Sweet, surprising and spit-out-your-soda-FUNNY! I adored EVERYTHING about Royally Matched.

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for a royal romance. I also loved Royally Screwed, the first book in this series. Royally Matched takes this series and my “royal standards” to a whole new level.

Henry is a rogue. He’s mischievous, impulsive and unsettled. His new position as next-in-line to be the King of Wessco hasn’t really changed him all that much; unless you count the additional insomnia and stress. In an effort to reclaim a bit of his life before he received the weight of the crown; he signs up to star in a reality dating show. Enter sweet and studious Sarah. She’s the epitome of the shy and sexy librarian. And, Henry can’t help falling in love with her.

Their romance is tender and charming, born of mutual attraction and heart-felt respect. They are a perfect match each bringing out the best in the other. Henry and Sarah create a motion-picture-perfect love story that will have you up all night and sneaking reads during the day. I enjoyed a combo – Kindle/Audiobook read of the story and it was a fantastic complete experience. If you enjoy audiobooks, this one is terrific! Royally Matched is one royal romance it would be treasonous to miss!

Review – Riveted by Jay Crownover

RIVETED - header banner

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the next installment in the Saints of Denver series.

Riveted - cover

Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him…even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying.

When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

BFF K’s Review of Riveted

rating_4.5

Riveted was full of all the things I have come to expect from a Jay Crownover story, particularly in this Saints of Denver Series. The characters are fully developed. They have complete backstories and histories that drive who they are and mold the story, but don’t feel like they drag down the pacing of the entire book. There are plenty of steamy scenes and loads of romance from an uber-protective, alpha male.

The settings of Denver and Mississippi are fresh and enhance the storyline. The characters, their personal dramas and shared threats are all endearing and exciting to read. Dixie is sweet, but don’t let the sweetness  and light fool you. Although Church refers to her in number of ways that compare her to sunshine, she’s still has no problem laying down the law when it comes to those she loves. Church has had a heartbreaking past that has molded him into the man he is. But, he will have to decide if he can grow up and become the man that Dixie deserves.

Riveted is a solid romance with unique settings, all the feels and some outstanding characters. I’m looking forward to Salvaged, the next book in the Saints of Denver series, but at the same time, I know that I’m definitely not ready for this series to conclude. If you haven’t read the Saints of Denver series, it’s absolutely one to add to your TBR list, and Riveted in particular!

Review – Fake Fiancée by Ilsa Madden-Mills

From WSJ Bestselling Author Ilsa Madden-Mills comes a new stand-alone contemporary romance.

Fake engaged to the hottest quarterback in the country? SCORE.

They say nothing compares to your first kiss,

But our first kiss was orchestrated for an audience.

Our second kiss . . . that one was REAL.

He cradled my face like he was terrified he’d f*ck it up.

He stared into my eyes until the air buzzed.

Soft and slow, full of sighs and little laughs,

He inhaled me like I was the finest Belgian chocolate,

And he’d never get another piece.

A nip of his teeth, his hand at my waist . . .

And I was lost.

I forgot he was paying me to be his fake fiancée.

I forgot we weren’t REAL.

Our kiss was pure magic, and before you laugh and say those kinds of kisses don’t exist,

Then you’ve never touched lips with Max Kent, the hottest quarterback in college history.

Three months. Two hearts. One fake engagement.

An unfortunate turn of events forces her to trade sunny Los Angeles with the rainy, chilly highlands of Scotland. She has the chance to work as one of the makeup artists on a new TV series based on a fantasy saga everyone is bananas about, but she can’t help feeling lost and a little bit homesick. Until she starts falling for Hugh MacLeod, the actor set to impersonate the titular role of Abarath, dragon slayer and part-time Casanova.

Hugh MacLeod is ready for his big break. After more than a decade taking every possible acting job just to stay afloat, he can finally show his range in a series to be proud of. Hugh’s commitment to his career comes before anything else, and that’s part of the reason why he hasn’t had a serious relationship in a while. But the more he’s around Sam, the more he knows he’s in deep, deep trouble. How is he supposed not to fall for the sexy, mysterious brunette who works all over him every single day? Every touch, every look is torture.

Getting lost in each other might be wrong, but it could end up being just what they need.

Lucas Thatcher has always been my enemy.

It’s been a decade since I’ve seen him, but our years on opposite coasts were less of a lasting peace and more of a temporary cease-fire. Now that we’re both back in our small town, I know Lucas expects the same old war, but I’ve changed since high school—and from the looks of it, so has he.

The arrogant boy who was my teenage rival is now a chiseled doctor armed with intimidating good looks. He is Lucas Thatcher 2.0, the new and improved version I’ll be competing with in the workplace instead of the schoolyard.

I’m not worried; I’m a doctor now too, board-certified and sexy in a white coat. It almost feels like winning will be too easy—until Lucas unveils a tactic neither of us has ever used before: sexual warfare.

The day he pushes me up against the wall and presses his lips to mine, I can’t help but wonder if he’s filling me with passion or poison. Every fleeting touch is perfect torture. With every stolen kiss, my walls crumble a little more. After all this time, Lucas knows exactly how to strip me of my defenses, but I’m in no hurry to surrender.

Knowing thy enemy has never felt so good.

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things… everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors are Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I’m a comedy geek and love all things “funny”. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

Review – Stay by A.L. Jackson

Stay

A Bleeding Stars Stand-Alone Novel

“Stay is a power, heart-wrenching story that will consume you heart and soul, leaving you utterly breathless days after the last page is read.” – Kelly Elliott New York Times bestselling author

From NYT & USA Today Bestselling Author A.L. Jackson comes the next sexy, gripping Bleeding Stars Stand-Alone Novel…

I’m Ash Evans.
The life of the party.
Hot. Rich. Charismatic.
A tattooed rock star with the world at my feet.
I burn through women faster than the strike of a match.

I’ve embraced my lifestyle and live it to the fullest.
Until the day my lifestyle caught up to me.

Willow Langston found me at my lowest.
Literally.
Facedown in a puddle of my own blood.

I owe her my life and I have three months to repay that debt.
What I never should have done was touch her. Kiss her. Take her to my bed.

Love wasn’t supposed to be a part of the equation.
I gave up that nasty complication a long damned time ago.
Now I want her more than my next breath.
But she doesn’t know what I know.

Do I leave to protect her? Or can I face my demons and ask her to Stay?

BFF K’s Review of Stay

rating_5_80

Ash Evans is the jokester of the Sunder Crew. He’s the comic relief in a band known more for thrashing than ballads. Ash is the good guy, life of the party, always ready with a quip or a flirtatious comment, but underneath shiny veneer is a wounded soul. When he opens his eyes to Willow Langston as he lays broken and bleeding outside her shop, he’s drawn to her in ways he doesn’t understand.

The story of Ash and Willow is not a comedy. Stay is not a light-hearted romp….It’s more of a ‘rip your heart out, crush it bit by bit and destroy it’ kind of book. But, there is growth that comes from pain for both of the main characters and a redemption that is so perfect, it might go down as one of my all-time favorite “grand gestures”!

Stay is the perfect compliment to the rest of the books in the Bleeding Stars Series. But, you don’t have to read the others to enjoy the saga of Ash and Willow. I have loved these characters since I first clicked play on the audio for Where Lightning Strikes and I’ve been invested ever since. I’m a girl who typically avoids angst at all cost. But, this series is so incredible that I will gladly open the book knowing that it will rip my heart to shreds more than once before it’s over. And, the pain is worth every turn of the page. A.L. Jackson’s writing is picturesque and poetic and a pure joy to read. I absolutely recommend, Stay and all of the stories in the Bleeding Stars Series.

BFF K’s Review of Tequila & Tailgates

rating_5_80

Tequila & Tailgates killed me with the sweetness and the steam! Both of the BFF’s loved Whiskey & Honey, the first book in the Country Road series. And as much as I adored Bentley (the hero of W&H) I’m pretty sure Jameson ranks just above him on the book boyfriend scale!

Jameson and Ashton have history. And there are reasons why they’ve shared little more than insults in the past few years. Their pasts are revealed and you get an understanding of why there is so much choppy water under the bridge. But, when Jameson and Ashton find themselves in close proximity for a prolonged period….something’s got to give. Ashton is a little prickly. There are parts of her personality that are abrasive. Her pokey-edges have been sharpened by personal experiences and a few inner demons. While I adore Jameson, he’s not always been the most mature and level-headed guy. But, both of these characters are so real and relatable. You’ll identify pieces and characteristics that you can understand and sympathize with.

I adore Andrea Johnston’s cast of fantastic characters. They’re charming, clever, sassy and snarky. The story is character driven and full of sweet emotions and super steamy scenes. Tequila & Tailgates can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s a great next step for the Country Road Series. I can’t wait to see which of the gang falls in love next! And I can’t wait for you to fall in love with these stories too!

PS – I’m pretty sure T&T will go down as the first official use of  “Champagning” as a word! But, I’m totally using from now on!

Excerpt

We spent the entire weekend at the lake eating, drinking, and swimming. It’s a tradition that we maintain to this day. On the final night of the weekend, Jameson and I were the last two awake by the fire. I think together we managed to consume an entire bottle of tequila. And, as it often is, the alcohol was a sort of truth serum for us.

We started a game of Truth or Dare, which never quite mustered a dare. Until the end. Truths varied from cheating on history tests to sneaking in after curfew and even first crushes. I admitted to my fear of small children and Jameson admitted his fear of a woman dressed in head-to-toe leopard. We laughed and we cried. Tears from laughter, not sadness.

Then he asked me the final truth or dare as I took my last shot and handed him the bottle.

“Truth or Dare, Ash?”

“Hmmm. Well, considering we’ve just demolished a bottle of tequila, neither seems like a good idea. I’m likely to break a leg or make an ass of myself.”

“I’d go with the ass part. I don’t think either of us wants a lecture from Piper if we have to go to the hospital.”

“Ain’t that the truth. Okay then. Truth it is. Hit me.”

“Do you ever think about kissing me?”

Seconds that feel like minutes pass between us. Something glimmers in his eyes as he asks me. Screw it, I can always blame the tequila.

“Yes.”

His breath hitches and a sinister smile takes over my face. Two can play this game.

“Your turn, J. Truth or Dare?”

He stands and finishes the tequila straight from the bottle and takes the three steps necessary to stand in front of me. He bends so that his hands rest on the arms of my chair and leans in. I can smell the tequila on his breath mixing with mine. My own breath hitches.

“Dare, Sunshine.”

“I hate that name.”

“I know.”

Our words are whispers.

“I dare you to kiss me.”
