The Hidden LIbrary Cover

Sometimes, the rabbit hole is deeper than expected . . .

Alice Reeve and Finn Van Brunt have tumbled into a life of secrets. Some secrets they share, such as their employment by the clandestine organization known as The Collectors’ Society. Other secrets they carry within them, fighting to keep buried the things that could change everything they think they know.

On the hunt for an elusive villain who is hell-bent on destroying legacies, Alice, Finn, and the rest of the Society are desperate to unravel the mysteries surrounding them. But the farther they spiral down this rabbit hole, the deeper they fall into secrets that will test their loyalties and pit them against enemies both new and old.

Secrets, they come to find, can reveal the deadliest of truths.

That’s What She Said – Author Interview with Heather Lyons

BFF K: Let’s just get this one out of the way……When can we expect Book #3 in The Collectors’ Society series?

HL: I don’t have a set date yet, as I’m still working on it, but definitely this year!

__________

BFF K: Though they’re fiction, books become part of our lives and part of our view of time and place. As you’re working with these classics, does it almost feel like you’re re-writing history?

HL: You know, it’s funny you ask this, because it was a question I considered early on in the process and had to purposely choose to set aside for my own sanity’s sake. While I’m definitely utilizing classic characters within the world of the Collectors’ Society, this is also firmly my story (if that makes sense!).

__________

BFF K: There were several boys in my high school who absolutely loved the Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. I think they might be surprised with the direction the story takes in The Hidden Library. Do you worry what readers will think about your updates to some of their most beloved stories?

HL: It’s another question I’ve considered and then had to set aside, simply because it’s a terrifying prospect. I am keenly aware that there are beloved characters within my story, and I have done my best to stay true to their arcs and personalities. I did quite a bit of research for the series, both rereading the source materials and then hunting down scholarly analyses of the books and characters to better understand the significance behind the characters and their stories. From there, I crafted what I thought the characters would be like, given the foundations from the source materials. But in the end, I’ve told the most authentic story that I wanted to tell.

__________

BFF K: There are so many fantastic, iconic, rich characters available in the classics. How do you choose who is perfect for the stories in The Collectors’ Society series?

HL: Well, my reasons are multifold. First, I chose characters that I really liked or found interesting. Alice, for example, has always been one of my very favorite literary characters. Secondly, I carefully selected those whose stories and experiences best suited not only the Society’s needs but my own (haha). And then, finally, I tried to really dig deep and not go with the ones people would obviously expect, because where’s the fun in that?

________

BFF K: It is no secret that I absolutely adore Alice, I think she is one of the most phenomenal heroines I’ve ever read. How do you consistently give her thought process and dialogue both courage and vulnerability?

HL: Here’s the thing, if I can be honest for a moment. I chose to craft Alice the way she is for a lot of reasons, but the big one is that I’m tired of people complaining about so-called Mary Sues or Bellas. It seems like anytime a heroine or MC shows any emotion, she’s labeled one of those terms, and it’s maddening to read. Why is showing emotion such a bad thing? Why is vulnerability so looked down upon? I’ve always had a very clear picture that Alice is tough and capable, but she’s also got a distinct vulnerability to her. Her emotions, her experiences have shaped her personality quite distinctly. And while life hasn’t always gone the way she’s wanted, there’s very little she would ever change about her history. When I write her, I always keep in mind: 1) Victorian attributes; 2) queenly attributes; 3) the emotional scars she proudly carries with her; and 4) how she’s not down with anyone trying to make her feel like she’s anything other than what she is.

__________

BFF K: The Collectors’ Society timelines cover so much ground! You jump from place to place and century to century. Is there one place or time that you’ve enjoyed writing about more than another? Is there a genre you haven’t explored yet that we might get to see in the future?

HL: Wonderland is definitely fun for me to write, simply because it’s so incredibly vivid in my mind. I would love to really explore the Society members within a high fantasy or even sci-fi, to be honest.

__________

BFF K: For those readers who are going to be beside themselves until the next book in the series is released….Is there anything you can tell us about what’s in store for our beloved Collectors’ Society?

HL: The Society will be even more determined to hunt down the villain(s) behind the Timeline deletions, and Alice will be right there, leading the charge. I think readers will definitely delight in seeing Queen Alice, in OR out of Wonderland, kicking butt and taking names!

__________

BFF K’s Review

rating_5_80

I LOVED The Hidden Library. You will turn the pages faster and faster as you move through the book until you realize you’ve reached the end and are still holding your breath to see what happens next!

Heather Lyons has done it again. I said it after The Collectors’ Society, and I’ll say it again, Alice kicks ass! It is no secret that I absolutely adore Alice, I think she is one of the most well written heroines I’ve ever found. Heather has written a character so incredible that I want to see her attributes in every book I read. Alice is a mixture of traits that would seem to be at odds with one another. Yet Heather pulls them together in a way that just makes sense and presents Alice with such consistency that you understand how all of her attributes fit and work together. Alice is at the same time: tough and vulnerable, sensitive and strong, courageous and exposed, independent and a team player, refined and bold. I LOVE how Alice NEVER backs down from a fight. She is honest, trustworthy, selfless and fiercely loyal – it feels like she speaks profound sentiments every time she opens her mouth. BUT, she’s not annoying or judgmental or stiff. Alice is the kind of woman that men fall in love with, and women envy. She absolutely deserves the love and devotion of two incredible men.

Finn….Swoon….He’s amazing! Like Alice, Finn is a fantastic mix of characteristics that make you admire and respect him. He’s a guy’s-guy and a woman’s dream.

Things always get a little more interesting when the White King is around. My heart aches every time Jace enters the picture. His devotions to Alice and to Wonderland are selfless and honorable. He shows up to save the day more than once and oh, does he look good doing it!

I marvel at how Heather Lyons can write a story that is a love triangle, but not a love triangle. Alice is adored and revered by two different men. Heather masterfully demonstrates how someone can love two people at the same time. No one involved is necessarily at fault, there are no victims or guilty parties. In the end, the genuine feelings of sacrificial love for one another guide all of the interactions.

More and more is revealed in this book about a number of the series’ characters and some new ones are introduced. I was particularly struck by the revelations around Victor. While the scenario presented is not necessarily surprising, Lyons uncovers Victor’s secrets in a way that is poignant and touching. I’m interested to see how Victor plays into the next story!
The Hidden Library features something new to the series with alternate points of view. You’ll hear from both Alice and Finn and I think the alternate POV is really well done. The story flows seamlessly between the two. But, both Finn and Alice have distinct voices. It really felt like the story was being told from 2 different characters and personalities and not just 2 different POV’s.

The adventures that Alice, Finn and the other members of The Collectors’ Society embark on in this book will make your heart race and your mind bend. You’ll wonder what could possibly happen next and be left speechless when it slides into its conclusion.

Excerpt

We are about to open the conference room door and enter the hallway when he stops. He turns to me, his lovely eyes achingly sincere. “I want to take you on a date when all of this craziness is over. A real one. We’ve kind of gone about this all backwards, haven’t we?”

One corner of my mouth lifts up. “Are you saying you’d like to court me?”

There is no playfulness to his face, no quirk to his own lips. My heart flutters at his seriousness. “Yes.”

He wants to court me.

Too many emotions rush around in a caucus race throughout my body. I have no doubts of Huckleberry Finn Van Brunt’s feelings toward me. I understood them two minutes ago just as well as I did this morning when I woke up and from the night before and from the day in Wonderland where he said, in not so many words, that he was falling in love with me.

I told him he was my north star, and meant it. He countered we are binaries.

He and I . . . We’ve never said those words, though, not the ones that truly spell out fragile, deep secrets of a heart and soul. Words so easily and yet unfortunately uttered by many, be it to express their appreciation of fried bits of potatoes to sports teams on the television. Words offered so frivolously about a variety of subjects and yet can be the most difficult, most painful, most meaningful, most cherished syllables we gift another person.

I have said these words before, to another man. Another man I still love. One I know, in the deepest confines of my heart, that I will love until the last breath escapes my body. A man who courted me in secret and then publicly in the face of astonishment, disapproval, confusion, and, in the end, prophesies.

I have willingly given the man in front of me my heart, though, whether he knows it or not. He now holds it in his hands, and while I pray he is my future, there is still a part of me that bucks in conflicted confusion and delight by this declaration of his.

He wants to court me.

And yet, as sweet and romantic as such a gesture might be, I require no such formalities. My affections for Finn Van Brunt have already solidified into something real and wonderful and meaningful.

The Top 6 Reasons Finn is our Book Boyfriend

After searching for these quotes, I desperately want to read this book again. I’ve never highlighted so many passages in a book. I love it SO MUCH!

1. Finn is sweet! He’s kind, he’s caring, he wonderful.

“Finn Van Brunt has manners. He’s kind to children. I hate the tingling that spreads in the pit of my belly.”

2. He fiercely loves Alice!

“Finn says my name softly, like it’s a prayer or a plea.”

3. Finn protects Alice, but not in a smothering, doesn’t-think-she-can-take-care-of-herself, kind of way.

” ‘The nice thing about partners,’ he says just as softly, ‘is that two are always stronger than one.’ “

4. He makes us think impure thoughts about spending time in a closet. (BFF K fans herself!)

“Time blurs together until it’s meaningless, until the closet and clothes disappear around us. Everything in this moment is touch and sensation, and I’m drunk on it.”

5. Finn has a sarcastic, silly, teasing side to his personality.

” ‘Oh, I’m familiar with weapons, Finn.’  ‘Ladies and gentlemen,’ he sweeps a hand out, ‘may I present Alice, the master of understatement.’

6. He is dreamy.

“He’s beautiful. Handsome is probably a more dignified term, but the golden-brown hair, light blue-gray eyes, and tanned skin really do come across as more beautiful than anything else.”

A visit to Heather Lyon’s Pinterest Board for The Collectors’ Society will reveal her inspiration photo for Finn.

I like to call this pic the “Finnspiration”. (BFF K fans herself again!)

BFF K’s Review

This post is very exciting for several reasons! We’re thrilled to be among the first to review The Collectors’ Society by Heather Lyons. She’s one of my favorite authors and I can’t wait to recommend this book to you.

This review also debuts a new rating for the BFF Book Blog. We’re introducing the 6 Rating (our previous high was a 5) and we’re thrilled to give our first 6 Rating to The Collectors’ Society by Heather Lyons! rating_6_70

This book cannot be missed. I am seriously at a loss for the right words to describe just how much I absolutely adore every bit of this story. Here are just a few of the reasons:

1. Alice is a seriously kick-ass character! I think that she might be the best written female character that I can remember reading. She’s strong, smart, brave, independent and witty. She can role with the punches (literally) and adapt to whatever comes her way. She has an internal moral compass and remarkable loyalty. Alice is the new standard that I set for all heroines.

2. This is a story that you’ve never read before. It is fresh, unique, inventive and absolutely  captivating.

3. I’ve never highlighted as many sentences, paragraphs and sections as I did in this book! It is so lovely and bright and artfully written that I want to remember the words, phrases and emotions of so many passages. The writing is incredible and I am again so amazed by how artfully Heather Lyons weaves words together that make me want to savor so many of the passages!

4. This book has something for everyone. It’s got romance, action, a little heartache, intrigue, and nostalgia.

5. This is a love story. At the core of all of Heather’s books are really fantastic love stories, and The Collectors’ Society is no exception. I can’t count the number of times that butterflies tried to burst out of my stomach and my heart threatened to race from my chest. Seriously….SWOON! Finn now holds a permanent place in the top of my book boyfriend list.

6. Did I mention that Alice kicks ass? The cast of supporting characters is also really fantastic!

I’ll admit, I was a little worried at the beginning of the book. I’m no expert on Alice in Wonderland. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to understand the story. BUT, that didn’t hamper my enjoyment of the book one bit! I even uncovered a few of the easter eggs that Heather has included for fans of Alice in Wonderland.

I could go on and on and on and on and on. But, I still won’t be able to do the book justice. Just buy it. Right now. And, then come back and tell me when you’re finished so that we can dish about how wonderful it is!

Excerpt:

“Do you find my ability to converse lacking, Doctor?”

He chuckles softly, no doubt remembering how I wasn’t chatty with anyone, himself included, for the first month of my stay. To be fair, it is difficult to carry on an invigorating discussion when one is shaking so hard from withdrawals they fear they might shatter into thousands of painful pieces before a single word can be uttered. Plus, there was the whole bit of how once I did open up, I raved liked a lunatic about things no normal person could imagine being true.

“Certainly not,” he says to me. “But as I must stay at the Pleasance and you must go forth into the world, it will do you good to practice on somebody new.”

“Then send in one of the orderlies. Or one of the nurses. I’ll happily chat with a staff member.”

One of his bushy, out-of-control eyebrows lifts high into his forehead.

“There are people out there who are quite content being solitary,” I point out. “Who do not need to converse with anybody but themselves and their dogs.”

He sets his pen down. “What about cats?”

Rigor mortis sets in ever so briefly at this question.

“You father said you were quite fond of cats growing up. There was one in particular that you favored. Dinah, was it not?”

“I’m—” I have to clear my throat. “Lately, I wonder if perhaps I’m more of a dog person after all.”
